Putting BaSt-Ing spindle wedges to work

BaSt-Ing ValFix set up in tree ready for use

We offer a selection of spindle wedges from BaSt-Ing GmbH, the German manufacturer behind the range. The range includes the ValFix, UniVal and MaxVal, with lifting capacities of 15, 25 and 30 tonnes respectively, alongside the remotely operated ValRemote with ValFast.

Recent photos supplied by A.C. Rourke Timber Contractor shows a BaSt-Ing spindle wedge at work. Across their recent posts, the contractor has shown the wedges being used on roadside trees, heavy-limbed outsiders and trees with a lean.

Their verdict was straightforward: “The BaSt-Ing wedge makes the job easier.” After using a BaSt-Ing wedge on roadside trees, they described it as “a real game changer”. On another job, the wedge was put through its paces and was said to be “showing great promise”.

That is about as complicated as the verdict needs to be. A felling aid has to earn its place in the kit and deliver reliable lift when a tree needs more persuasion than a standard wedge can provide.

The same principle, with more choice

The working principle behind the BaSt-Ing range is straightforward. A battery-powered impact wrench drives the threaded spindle, advancing the wedge and applying progressive lift through the back cut.

The impact wrench supplies the input normally applied with a hammer, while the spindle converts that torque into controlled, repeatable lift.

BaSt-Ing hasn’t tried to make one wedge do every job. Our current range includes three spindle wedges with different combinations of carrying weight and lifting capacity, alongside the remotely operated ValRemote with ValFast system.

ValFix

The ValFix is the lightest spindle wedge on the market. It weighs less than 1.4kg and has a lifting capacity of 15 tonnes, giving it a strong power-to-weight ratio.

Its compact size makes it the most portable option for cutters moving regularly between trees. The partially integrated spindle keeps the overall length down while retaining sufficient wedge travel, and grease nipples on both threaded nuts allow straightforward lubrication during regular use.

UniVal

The UniVal sits between the ValFix and MaxVal, combining a weight of 2.7kg with a lifting capacity of 25 tonnes.

It is designed for medium to strong timber and regular professional use. The spindle is turned from solid high-quality CrMo steel, and the wedge can also be operated with a ratchet if required.

For cutters looking for considerably more lifting capacity than the ValFix without moving to the size and weight of the MaxVal, the UniVal provides the middle option in the range.

MaxVal

For large-diameter timber, the MaxVal is the biggest spindle wedge in our range.

It weighs 6kg and has a lifting capacity of 30 tonnes, with its construction focused on maximum lifting capacity rather than low carrying weight. The MaxVal is intended for heavier felling work where the additional capacity justifies carrying a larger wedge.

ValRemote with ValFast

The ValRemote with ValFast provides the remotely operated option in the range. It combines the ValFast spindle wedge with an impact-wrench system and infrared remote control.

Once the wedge has been installed, the drive unit can be activated remotely. This allows the cutter to move away from beneath the crown before applying lift and while the trunk is moving.

The drive unit can also be disconnected from one wedge and transferred to another. This allows additional spindle wedges to be used during the same felling operation without requiring a separate drive unit for each one.

The system is particularly relevant where the cutter’s position during lifting is a significant consideration.

ValLink connector

We also supply the ValLink connector separately for use with a range of BaSt-Ing wedges.

The ValLink connects the impact wrench and tool to create a single working unit. The impact wrench can still be disconnected and used for other work when required.
